“It Depends …”: Using Ambiguities to Better Understand Mathematics Teachers’ Decision-making

چکیده
The concept of teacher noticing has been a powerful methodological tool for understanding teachers’ decision-making and professional judgment. In this line inquiry, researchers usually try to identify elements classroom practice salient teachers. Data about decision making can be collected at scale through the use scenario-based instruments, but these instruments have described in literature as inherently ambiguous because they do not contain all information necessary make decision. We contribute ambiguity so help connect their judgment by introducing conditional construals—moments when teachers require additional context order judge whether given teaching action is appropriate. Furthermore, we locate construals large corpus responses items identifying occurrences linguistic marker. Our identification moments allows us study type reasoning (analytical or intuitive) evoked scenarios gives insight into decisions.

Agroforestry adoption in Mexico: using Keynes to better understand farmer decision-making
The objective of this paper is to empirically test the hypothesis that reducing uncertainty for farmers through investment in human capital increases the likelihood of participation in an agroforestry development program. A model based on Keynes’s notion of profit expectations and “weight” is developed in order to gain some insight into agroforestry adoption behavior. Data was collected near th...
متن کاملUsing narratives to understand older people's decision-making processes.
Despite the availability of health and social care services designed to support people in their own homes, older people often underuse or refuse these services. It is now acknowledged that this phenomenon contributes to older people being admitted to hospital and long-term care in circumstances that could be avoided. To understand how the uptake of supportive and preventative services can be im...
متن کاملUsing Mathematics to Understand HIV Immune Dynamics
S ince the early 1980s there has been a tremendous effort made in the mathematical modeling of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus which causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). The approaches in this endeavor have been twofold; they can be separated into the epidemiology of AIDS as a disease and the immunology of HIV as a pathogen (a foreign substance detrimental to the...
متن کاملPharmacoeconomics--an aid to better decision-making.
OBJECTIVES The first aim of this workshop was to define pharmacoeconomic concepts and terminology. Pharmacoeconomics can be defined as the branch of economics that uses cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness, cost-minimization, cost-of-illness and cost-utility analyses to compare pharmaceutical products and treatment strategies. Economic evaluations provide healthcare decision-makers with valuable in...
متن کاملUsing Twins to Better Understand Sibling Relationships
We compared the nature of the sibling relationship in dyads of varying genetic relatedness, employing a behavioural genetic design to estimate the contribution that genes and the environment have on this familial bond. Two samples were used-the Sisters and Brothers Study consisted of 173 families with two target non-twin children (mean ages = 7.42 and 5.22 years respectively); and the Twins, Fa...
